25 Ways to Top Up Your Tank in Ten Minutes
25 Ngā Tikanga hei Whakakī i Tō Taika i roto
i te Tekau Meneti

And we're not talking about the water tank! Often our tanks get depleted, and we can feel exhausted, burnt out, low and stressed. Getting some quick bursts of self-care in to our daily routine can really help us to start feeling replenished, more patient, more energised and more equipped to deal with what life may bring....

Breathe! - By focusing on our breathing regularly, we can really make a difference to how we feel.

Meditate - Not everyone finds this easy. If it works for you, great! If you find it hard to get into, refer to tip number 1.

Get outside -  Just ten minutes outside can really help ground us.

Read - Studies show that if we spend our free time doing something like reading, listening to a podcast or catching up with  friends, it helps us feel like we have much more time than if we spend it on devices/watching TV.

Dance - Ten minutes of dancing to an uplifting track can raise the heartbeat, get your body moving and be very uplifting.

Become Wonderwoman - Have you heard of the Wonderwoman poses? If not, Check out Amy Cuddy on YouTube.

Journal - Getting our thoughts or ideas out on paper can be  beneficial in so many ways. The Retreat offers a secure blogging platform, if you like processing stuff online - and one of our team will be alongside you throughout your journaling. Contact us to find out more.

Practise gratitude - One of the ways of journaling can be writing down three, five or ten things that you’re grateful for.

Listen to music - Got a positive playlist?  Crank it up for ten minutes, or stick your earphones in and zone out!

Play with a four-legged friend - Do you have pet? Zoom in on him/her - cuddles with our furry friends can help ground us and feel that love!

Do a good turn - Paying it forward can be a great way of topping up the tanks, when done with the right intention. This is not to be confused with being there for everyone, which can in turn empty the tanks!

Feeling stuck? Not sure where to turn?
Maybe we can help. Reach out to us to
find out if Taranaki Retreat is the right fit for you.

Log off - Switch off all devices for a bit, and remember the time when you were fine without them!

Study/research - Are you working on something at the moment, or interested in something?  How about a quick burst of study?

Repeat affirmations - Create a set of positive statements about yourself to be repeated frequently. The best bit? It doesn’t matter if you don’t quite believe them yet. The subconscious doesn’t know the difference, and it's the subconscious that needs to hear them.

Have a new experience - Pop in to a gallery/exhibition/museum or art cafe, somewhere you may not normally go (we love the Len Lye in New Plymouth). New/different experiences can be a great way to top up the tanks.

Get arty - How about starting or working on your latest project? At the Retreat, our Art/GymCave is one of our favourite go-to places, and we find so much relaxation in giving the creative side an airing.
Acknowledging yourself -  Get that list of acknowledgements out, or start writing yours - Ten minutes worth of things you acknowledge yourself for. Keep the list and add to it next time.

Do a ten minute cleanup - At home?  Just taking ten minutes regularly can help keep the home up together!

Laugh - Try Laughter Yoga, a funny clip, anything that brings that chuckle on!

Sing - In the shower, in the car, on Back Beach - wherever, open up those lungs!

Go for a walk around the block - Get the blood pumping and be really mindful of everything that you can see, hear, touch, taste and smell on your way.

Spend ten minutes in front of the mirror saying I love you - again, like 14, don’t worry if its not quite sounding true right now!

Have a snack -  Focus totally on the food you are eating and be really mindful about it.  Notice all of the flavours and textures.

Be a kid - What about doing something from younger years - sitting on a swing, feeding the ducks (not with bread!) or draw up a hopscotch!

Smile - Even a forced smile has been found to make a difference, so if it doesn’t quite feel natural to begin with, stick to it!
