I’ve lived in New Plymouth since April 2013 with my wife and 5 children. We arrived in NZ with just 4 kids and our baby daughter was born here. We left the UK seeking a better quality of life and improved safety for our children. As beautiful a country as New Zealand is, it has a problem with mental health and youth suicide. I was involved in the Retreat when it was a big overgrown field and continued to help over the years before agreeing to join the Trust Board in Dec 2016. I don’t proclaim to be an expert on mental health and have very little personal experience with suicide but feel that this is a problem that cannot continue any longer. For whatever reason the current systems aren’t working well enough and the Retreat’s unique approach adds another resource to solving this problem. A lack of a personal story doesn’t mean I can’t help, I can. Healing a community comes from the people within the community. Taranaki is my community and I want to do my bit to help.
