A massive thanks to Awapuni Nurseries who have just donated us a huge amount of veggie plants and some flowers too! Super excited to get our new season vegetables growing....
Kia ora from Taranaki Retreat
Its been a long wet Winter, and despite the huge amounts of rain and resultant mud here onsite, you can finally see that Spring is underway. We are super-excited that our orchard was planted out with a really successful working bee, under the superb guidance of our Head Gardener, Gordon. Thanks to all who helped. It is exciting to watch the leaves covering the branches and the first blossoms appearing.
We were also lucky enough to have the Taranaki Bulls at the Retreat for a morning's hard graft. We split them into 3 teams and they shored up a crumbling stream bank with sand bags, fitted solar lighting all along the path to the lodge and built us a fabulous 3 way compost bin. All the materials were very kindly donated by Mitre 10.
As well as working on our beautiful grounds, we have also been developing further how we support our Support Teams and the administrative side of running the Retreat. We receive numerous inquiries for our services every day and are doing our best to keep up with them, ensuring a timely response and assessment visits where applicable. Sometimes we offer outreach support to people where a residential stay isn't the right call, and sometimes we are able to put people in touch with some of the other excellent services that are available in Taranaki. We really need some more volunteer help for our Support Teams and Companion roles - if you have some spare time, a good listening ear and and are keen to find out more, please do get in touch! We offer our Support Team regular training and supervision and they are a great group of people to work with. The effectiveness of the Retreat relies on this vital support work. We are also hoping to find someone who could offer a regular "Introduction to Mindfulness" for Guests when needed; nothing complicated - just the basics. Is this something you might be able to help with?
Supporting the Supporters
We were delighted when BDO very kindly took on the cost of printing our Support Worker manuals recently, while Busing Russell support not only all our financial services but regular printing costs as well. Our suicide prevention work really is a community effort.
The Retreat has been open over 7 months and we have been able to help a wide variety of people going through tough times. This work is entirely funded by grants, donations and fundraising events. There is much to fund, and we have lots of plans! So please support us if you can....

ManCave Development on track, thanks to local sponsor
We were delighted to be contacted by the caring team at Tamarind recently. They were keen to partner with an on-site project. Their timing was perfect! We are very keen to build a Man Cave onsite for our Guests. We have often found that our Guests like to be doing something (eg messy art, or woodwork) and when the weather is bad there aren't always a lot of options. With the addition of an outdoor but covered space, Guests will be able to get creative without the worry of a paint spill inside the lodge; teens will be able to learn a new skill or two; some good times with powertools will be had. This is in the very early stages at the moment but it is a super exciting plan! Tamarind are very kindly sponsoring the costs of the project, which means we can keep our funds for the essential running and support of our Guests. In time we will be looking for mentors to come out to the Retreat and work alongside our guests from time to time. Please get in touch if you have some skills and time to share.
