Taranaki Retreat helped me to step away from my "every day" life and observe it from a safe distance. It enabled me to take a deep breath and assess the factors that had led me to the Retreat without having to be in the middle of all the chaos. I slept, I read (for the first time in years), and I worked on my social anxiety properly.
I rested and slept a great deal initially. Slowly, I began to become more rested and I turned my attention to helping in the garden. There is nothing more therapeutic than going to bed tired from working outside in the soil surrounded by beautiful animals, serenity and the knowledge that the tides are finally beginning to turn for you. I also discovered the beauty of mornings again. Sitting outside the Lodge with a coffee in the early morning and watching the sun come up over the hills, illuminating Mount Taranaki, became a powerful image and experience that contributed enormously to my healing.
By focusing on my own well being and health, I could slowly start to see through the fog of disorder I had temporarily stepped away from and start to identify what was wrong and what I could do to empower myself to re-enter my life with better skills and strategies to cope. Taranaki Retreat put me on the path to healing myself and realising that I myself was the catalyst for changing my life to where it is now.
The Retreat provides all the basics of what is required to bring about positive change: food, safety, support, solace, listening ears etc. The most vital ingredients have to come from the Guests themselves: Being open, the willingness to change, being honest to themselves, determination and finally realising that they themselves are the key to getting well.
I am living proof that the Retreat works. So many things that were out of control in my life prior to my stay have either been discarded or are now manageable. My life seems so utterly different and overwhelmingly positive six months down the track. Of course, life is always going to be a challenge; it is for everyone of course, and you can't expect a miracle the day you step back into your life. Like all good things, patience and perseverance coupled with the insights gained during my stay work together in unison to empower me to enjoy life more. I now take the challenges head on when they come towards me. Sometimes I lose, but I'm winning far more than I lose these days thanks to the Retreat!
Such a wonderful, caring, supportive, non judgmental environment. The veil that was covering my eyes and making me blind to taking control of my life was lifted at Taranaki Retreat.
